What is this ‘green tinted’ displays business?

In basic terms it is like having sun-glasses on the LED displays. This adds clarity to the numbers and helps in varying lighting conditions. It makes all the difference when it comes to operating the DRO in the real world.

Non-illuminated displays visible Yellow LED’s get lost in natural light making it very hard to see position Non-illuminated displays hidden Green LED’s remain clear even in natural light making it easier to see position

Things to consider:

LED DRO

Strengths

Weaknesses

Digital Readout displays come in two basic types: LED and LCD. The LED types are the most common and are the industry norm. In addition to the axes displays some have message displays and even tool/SDM displays (see EM200). When choosing an LED DRO ensure that the displays have a filter applied to ensure clear viewing. (Note: All ems-i LED DRO have a display filter). The LED's provide a fast display update and a broad viewing angle in a variety of ambient lighting conditions.

  • Most common available
  • Good viewing angle
  • Fast display update rate
  • Easy to use
  • Can be low cost
  • Limited information can be displayed. This means that whilst they are popular with skilled machinists they are not the best option for those with little or no machining knowledge.

LCD DRO

Strengths

Weaknesses

The LCD DRO's have a graphical screen, either mono or colour. These can display much more information and make programming of functions much easier. They also have detailed 'built-in' operational help, so little need for manuals. As they are more expensive they also tend to have more functionality and in the case of the EL600 and EL700, can store program's for future recall making them ideal for performing repeat jobs.

  • Latest technology
  • Easy to operate
  • See function settings at a glance
  • Built in Help
  • Comprehensive functionality
  • Ideal for Schools and colleges
  • Ideal for busy workshops with repeat work
  • Display updates not as quick as LED
  • Viewing can be difficult in direct sunlight
  • Can be expensive

Keypad type?

The keypad is how you interact with the DRO. The type volume of work you do, budget and personal preference can all effect the most suitable choice.

Things to consider:

Display type?

The main modern choices are LED and LCD.  Again this boils down to the work being processed and the available budget. LED is the most common but as LCD displays get more cost effective the information they can provide means that their market share is growing rapidly.
